AUTO BIOGRAPHY OF DR. LETICIA ADELAIDE APPIAH, MD, MPH, PhD.

 

Dr. Leticia Adelaide Appiah was appointed the Executive Director (ED) of the National Population Council, in November, 2016. Preceding this, she served in various capacities with the Ghana Health Service as a Medical Officer, Senior Medical Officer, and Specialist in Public Health for over two decades from 1994 to 2007.She later became the first Municipal Director of Health Services for Ledzokuku Krowor Municipality from 2008 to 2016.

Through her leadership efforts and collaboration, the LEKMA Hospital and the LEKMA Polyclinic in Nungua were built and made operational in then Ledzokuku/Krowor Municipal currently Ledzokuku and Krowor Municipalities.


Dr. Leticia, a Physician, a Public Health Specialist and a Global Expert in population and development has been instrumental in repositioning the unfinished business on population dynamics and development issues in Ghana as well as Sub-Saharan Africa. Her relentless efforts led to the revision of the 1994 Population Policy for the National Population Council to
the existing one.


Currently, Dr. Appiah is a member of the structural analysis team for ECOWAS vision 2050, a Consultant in Demography to the UN, a Member of Ghana’s Covid-19 Taskforce and Ghana Medical Association. She was also a member of the 2021 National Census Steering Committee.


Dr. Leticia Adelaide Appiah is a Humphrey fellow and the Vice President of the Hubert Humphrey Fellowship Alumni (Ghana Chatter). She is a board member of Partners in Population and Development; an intergovernmental organization of 27 countries promoting South South Cooperation. She is a member of the current Tamale Teaching Hospital and the Ghana Aids Commission Boards.


Dr. Appiah had her PhD in Public Health with specialization in Population, Family and Reproductive Health and her Masters Degree in Public Health with specialization in epidemiology and preventive medicine from the University of Ghana. She is a product of Donetsk Medical School in Ukraine for her Medical Degree and Emory University, Atlanta USA for her Humphrey Fellowship program.
